Hi everyone! My name is now Atami, and I am named after a beach in Japan. I am a 5-year-old female Shiba Inu! I was rescued with 20 other Shibas from a breeder facility, and DC SIR plans to help 40 more Shibas that were left behind after they finished paying for all our vetting. I had a long drive to Shiba HQ, which lasted all night. We arrived soon after the sun came up. When I first got out of the van and had a harness on me, I froze for a bit. I got used to wearing it after a while, and when all my friends started coming out of the van, we began exploring the yard together. My foster mom is very gentle and doesn’t yell at us, so I trusted her quickly and happily followed her into the house when she called. I learned to use the dog door and the stairs in just a couple of days. After a lot of the other dogs left for their foster homes, I started going up to my foster mom and pawing at her to put me up on the couch with her! I get along really well with all the other dogs at Shiba HQ, and Kitty – the 18-year-old cat who Shibas brought up likes to sleep in the bed next to me. I have been brave when people come to visit, and after the other dogs greet guests, I will come up and cautiously say hello too. Although I can't walk on a leash yet, I will probably be able to with time and patience. I am a happy girl, but I don’t like loud noises and a lot of action. I do love to play with other dogs and OH MY GOODNESS do I love boiled chicken and squeaky toys!!! Sometimes, I find a squeaky toy and try to hide it from the other dogs so I can have it all to myself. DC SIR thinks an adopter who understands reward-based training would be best for a gentle girl like me. If that is you, apply to adopt me at www.dcsir.org/adopt
