Hello everyone, my name is now Bijou, which means “Jewel” in French. I am a 10-year-old female Shiba Inu. I lived my whole life with a man who had to give me away when he was deployed to another country. Unfortunately, I went to stay with his friend, who didn’t really want my sister and me. DC SIR was contacted about us being left alone in a trailer for days without consistent food or water. Unfortunately, people who tried to help us were not given regular access. DC SIR tried to get us transport for nearly a month, but things kept falling through at the last minute. Finally, a volunteer from VA offered to drive a large portion of the drive. When she got to us, the advocate pulled us from the filthy trailer. We were so happy to see people and get attention. The volunteer noticed we were filthy, smelled, and covered in fleas. We were secured in our seats by seatbelts for the all-day drive to Shiba HQ. We had another transport in VA and finally arrived around 10:30 pm. We were quickly changed into harnesses with long leashes to explore the yard, potty, and drink. Since we were covered in fleas, we couldn’t meet the other dogs. Instead, we had our long nails trimmed and bathed until 1:30 am to remove the flea infestation. I cried and squirmed more than my sister, but eventually I just settled into my foster mom’s lap as she cleaned me. The next day, we had another 1.5 hr bath, this time with a flea dip that finally took out the fleas. I realized I felt sooo good after the bath, ate a huge meal, and finally got to meet the Shibas and cats at Shiba HQ. I could tell how loved all the dogs were, and now I stick close to my foster mom, hoping for attention. I dream of a forever home where I’m loved just as much — not as a pet, but as family.
