Carmel is a 3 year old female red Shiba Inu. View her Facebook Album.

Hi everyone. My new name is Carmel. We are going with beach-themed names, and Carmel is a beach that was down the road from one of my foster mom’s duty stations. It’s a beautiful place with the best sunsets. I’m a 3-year-old female, and I’m one of nearly 60 Shibas being rescued from a breeder. Some wonderful DC SIR volunteers drove 24 hours nonstop to bring me and 19 other Shibas to safety in this first wave of rescues. We arrived at Shiba HQ, but I was only there for a few days before my foster mom and brother came to pick me up. She actually picked up four of us! It was time to get in the car. I was scared, but I laid down next to the other fosters and fell asleep for most of the ride home. When I got home, I was still pretty scared. I went outside and explore the backyard. Then I spotted the deck and decided it would be the perfect place to hide underneath. I eventually worked up the courage to come out and went back inside with the rest of my foster siblings. I was given dinner, which I ate. I’m also starting to take some treats. They’re pretty yummy too, but I’m still not completely comfortable of my new surroundings. At bedtime, I settled in a comfy bed in the kitchen with my foster brother and sisters. I curled up and didn’t move all night. It was nice to have the other dogs nearby. Even though I’m scared, I really enjoy playing with the other dogs. They are helping me learn that this new life isn’t so scary after all. I know I’ll warm up soon. It’s just going to take some time, patience, and lots of positive experiences. For now, I’m taking things one day at a time. There are only good things coming from here on out!
