Ginkgo is a 3 year old female red Shiba Inu. View her Facebook Album.
Ginkgo is a small, stocky 3 year old female Shiba Inu from the second wave of 20 Shibas in our #60ShibasRescue! Our second-wave pups all received tree-inspired names, and Ginkgo is named after the ginkgo tree, one of the world's oldest surviving tree species, known for its distinctive fan-shaped leaves and incredible resilience.
Ginkgo is an adorable little fluffball, so you may not immediately notice that she has a partially bald tail. Since we know there are dogs from this group with a history of atopic skin issues — including a more severe case we have already pulled — we are going to monitor Ginkgo closely and make sure her coat begins growing back without needing more intensive intervention before placing her for adoption.
In the meantime, we're getting to know this sweet girl! Ginkgo does circle when she is stressed, something we often see in mill dogs Ginkgo gets along with most dogs. She can be a little growly when another dog gives her too much face time, but otherwise we haven't had any real issues with her. She is settling into life at Shiba HQ and showing us more of her personality every day.
Because of her skin and coat history, Ginkgo's adopter will be required to follow a mild version of our allergy-support program, with an emphasis on a nutrient-dense raw diet, supporting a diverse and healthy microbiome, and reducing unnecessary environmental toxin exposures.
We want a proactive pet parent who is willing to continue monitoring her skin and coat and address any changes early.

MEDICAL HOLD – ALLERGY PROGRAM REQUIRED
Ginkgo is a sweet, social little girl who is currently on medical hold while we assess and treat her skin and coat. She has some atopy, itchy/crusty skin and areas of hair loss. We are working to determine her individual triggers and the level of ongoing care she will need before making her available for adoption. Because of her allergy history, Ginkgo’s adopter will be required to continue DC SIR’s allergy-management program as part of her adoption contract. This includes: - A raw, whole-food diet and approved supplements/probiotics as indicated - Working with a holistic/integrative veterinarian familiar with allergy and immune-mediated skin conditions - Following our minimal-vaccine/titer protocol when medically appropriate and in accordance with applicable rabies laws - Avoiding routine use of isoxazoline flea/tick products and using an approved alternative parasite-prevention plan appropriate for her individual risk - Maintaining a low-toxin home environment, including careful selection of cleaners, detergents and products that contact her skin - Continuing any recommended skin, microbiome and supportive therapies based on her response to treatment We are not scheduling meets for Ginkgo at this time. Once we have established what she needs to remain healthy and comfortable, potential adopters will be considered based in part on their willingness and ability to maintain her allergy program long-term. Ginkgo is absolutely worth the extra effort—we simply want to make sure the progress we make with her continues for the rest of her life.
