Hi everyone! My name is now Laniakea, but my foster family calls me Lani for short. Laniakea is a beach on the North Shore of Oahu. It means “immense heaven” or “wide open skies” in Hawaiian. I think my new name is a sign of what my future will hold! I’m a 4-year-old female and one of nearly 60 Shibas being rescued from a breeder. Wonderful DC SIR volunteers drove 24 hours nonstop to bring me and 19 other Shibas to safety in this first wave of rescues. When we arrived at Shiba HQ, we went into the backyard, where there was so much space to run free! My foster family picked me up a few days later, and I handled the ride home well. I wanted to see out the window, so I moved for a better view. We stopped halfway home for a potty break, and I discovered I’m not great on a leash. It’s going to take time. When I got home, I explored for a bit before deciding that a dog bed in the corner would be my safe space. A later walk was very limited, but I was rewarded for walking in the right direction, which gave me confidence. My favorite place to sleep is my corner bed. I slept pretty well. I’m comfortable with my foster parents and human brother, and they’ve been very nice to me. I met the other dogs and was curious. There’s also a cat I haven’t met yet. My foster parents say I’m subdued because I’m stressed. A lot has happened in one week! I’m trying to show them my confident side, and I know it will shine with time. I can’t wait to find my forever home, where I’ll be happy and loved. Wide horizons are ahead!
