Hello, everyone! My name is Mokutan, which means "charcoal" in Japanese. I was named for my beautiful black coat that looks just like charcoal. I’m a 1-year-old black and tan male Shiba Inu, and I’m excited to tell you a little about my journey so far. My previous owners were moving and couldn’t care for me anymore, so I found my way into the care of DC SIR. When my foster mom picked me up, I was very brave on the ride home. I was curious about everything I saw and kept going up to her for snuggles. It felt good to have some comfort on that ride. When we got home, I sniffed around the backyard and went potty, then took a moment to explore my new surroundings. There’s another Shiba here with me, who’s also part of the DC SIR alumni family. I’m getting along great with him, and he seems to like me too! He tried to play with me, and I played back a little. It was fun! My foster mom switched out the harness I came with for one that fits me much better. I let her handle me without any issues. Then it was time for my first walk, and I followed my foster brother as he led the way. I love sniffing everything. I’m still feeling a little anxious, so I didn’t have much of an appetite at first. They offered me raw food, but I wasn’t interested. I did like the boiled chicken and broth they gave me. I gobbled that up. When it was time to sleep, I settled into the bed they set up for me in the living room. I whined a little but ended up sleeping soundly through the night. Everyone here is really nice, and I’m affectionate and social. I always want to be a part of whatever they’re doing. I can’t wait for the next chapter in my life…meeting my furever family!
