Hi everyone, my name is now Nash, and I am a 12-year-old male Shiba Inu. I found myself terrified after I lost the only home I had ever known. After my dad passed, my mom felt overwhelmed and surrendered me and another Shiba who also has bad allergies to an overcrowded shelter. My only hope of getting out alive was to have a rescue save us. We spent weeks waiting in our cage with the sound of so many dogs calling out for the families that abandoned them. Some of them went into the back room and never came out. I didn’t want to die here all alone. I spent nights staring out of my cage, remembering the comfort of a soft bed, safety of a home, and regular food. The shelter thought I may have CCD because I was so despondent. They reached out to DC SIR, who said they were full with two seniors who haven’t had any applicants. But I guess the fear and sadness in our faces haunted my soon-to-be foster mom. Soon, she was asking the shelter for videos to ensure we were comfortable with cats and dogs, as well as videos of us being handled because she would need to wash us, apply rinses to our skin, and perform a lot of handling on our road to recovery. We did so great with handling; in fact, we really loved being noticed again and feeling a kind touch. We spent weeks shaking in fear of the unknown. Then one morning, the DC SIR volunteer came with a pouch of boiled chicken. We got so many yummy treats. I was starving, too – you can feel every bone in my body jutting out. When we got to Shiba HQ, we knew we were safe. We met all the dogs and cats, got showered, and then ate nutrient-dense raw meals! We knew we were safe. I really hope I find a home that will appreciate how much love I have to give!
