Hi everyone, my name is now Nikita. I am an 8-year-old female Shiba Inu. I am tiny at just 16lbs. I was surrendered to a shelter with another Shiba after my human dad passed away. I lived with a total of 3 Shibas. Our mom didn’t feel she could care for all of us, so she surrendered me and a 12-year-old male Shiba Inu. We both have skin issues and aren’t in good shape. The shelter was overcrowded and wasn’t going to be able to keep us, so they reached out to DC SIR. They already have 2 senior Shibas who have been there all year with no applications, so they were not committed to taking two more long-term senior dogs. But my foster mom-to-be could see how scared & confused we looked in the shelter. She kept thinking about her own senior dogs and how terrified they would be. How horrible it would be for them to die scared without the comfort of their loved ones. The shelter staff was very kind in sending a lot of videos to ensure we would be comfortable with dogs, cats, and the extensive body handling that would be required to treat our allergies. Taking on senior dogs with allergies is not only costly but also incredibly time-consuming. However, the more videos that were sent, the more certain our rescue became. When we arrived at Shiba HQ, we got to meet all the dogs and cats, and there wasn’t one growl in the meet! We were wonderfully behaved for our bath, nail trim, rinses, and lotions. I was so happy to be safe in a home that I cuddled up with a toy and slept through the night. DC SIR thinks I will be ready for adoption pretty quickly. I still need to be spayed, microchipped and full medical but once I am healthy enough I hope you will consider adopting me!
