Hi everyone, my name is now Ophelia, and I am a tiny 11-year-old, red, female Shiba Inu. I only ever had one home with other Shiba Inus, and we were cared for and loved until things went bad over the last five years. When DC SIR got a call that another Shiba and I were living in a car during the hottest days of summer, they dropped everything to pick us up. My foster mom noticed that I was all skin and bones when she picked me up. I haven’t been in a safe space for a while and didn’t trust her. I would snap when she tried to pick me up because I was scared of what would happen to me. But she came and sat with me for hours, quietly working and putting boiled chicken in front of me. After a few hours, I gently took a piece of boiled chicken. It was so good that I ate an entire bowl! When I realized she wasn’t going to hurt me, I started to eat my meals with gusto. I need to gain a lot of weight, but they want to do this with small meals throughout the day. I haven’t been to a vet in years, and DC SIR has some concerns about my health due to being in a hot car while being emaciated. I prefer to sleep in my private area at night. During the day, I am becoming braver, and I even come into the kitchen with the other dogs and cats when it is time for food prep, hoping for some tasty snacks before my mealtime. My foster mom is taking her time building my trust. She thinks I should be able to get my bath and nail trim this week. I smell worse than puppy mill dogs! She says I am a petite, refined lady, and I will smell and look as beautiful as I am on the inside. In the meantime, follow my story to learn more about me. Once I am medically cleared, I will be ready to live the life of the princess I am with a family who loves me!
