Hi everyone, my name is Sheba. I’m a 8.5-year-old female Shiba Inu who spent my whole life in one loving home. Sadly, both my parents passed away just months apart. With no family, a neighbor was appointed as my guardian and POA of their estate. But when my guardian brought home a new puppy, they decided they could no longer keep me, and I suddenly needed a new place to go. Thankfully, another kind neighbor stepped in and kept me out of the shelter while searching for help. I did wonderfully with their male dog and played a lot, even though my heart was hurting. I’m told I was lucky - many dogs in my situation end up overwhelmed in shelters, handed off randomly, or worse. That neighbor found DC SIR. Even with a long waitlist and rising costs, the DCSIR volunteers made room for me right away. A volunteer even drove six hours round-trip to bring me to safety. I arrived with my favorite beds and bins of toys. At Shiba HQ, I met many other dogs — males & females — and I amazed everyone with my gentle behavior. Not a single growl during integration, which is rare for Shibas. Some dogs and cats seemed to feel my pain and comforted me my first days. I bonded quickly with my foster mom, who offered me warm boiled chicken and soft, reassuring words. I whimpered and checked every doorway in hopes my family might return. But with time, I’m growing stronger. I’ve started playing again, carrying my favorite toys, and showing my silly side. I’m learning that love can return in new forms, even after heartbreak. DC SIR hopes my story reminds everyone to have a clear plan for their pets. Now, I look forward to finding a forever home, could it be with your family?
